On October 6 Google released its updated image model. It promises better text inside images, more consistent characters and very wide formats.
What happened
On October 6, 2026 Google announced that Nano Banana 2.1 is now generally available (GA) in the Gemini API. It updates Nano Banana 2 and, per Google's changelog, keeps "Flash-level" speed and cost while improving several things creators care about.
What's better
- Higher visual quality and closer adherence to your prompt.
- More consistent characters when you edit the same image several times in one conversation (handy for brand mascots, comics or storybooks).
- Better text inside images: titles, posters, labels.
- Very wide or very tall formats (1:4, 4:1, 1:8 and 8:1) at 1K, 2K and 4K: great for banners, social covers or vertical strips.
Google also deprecated the previous model (gemini-3.1-flash-image), with no shutdown date announced yet.
What it means for you
If you make flyers, covers, banners or illustrated stories, legible text and characters whose face doesn't change between images are the classic headaches. Some outlets also report a price cut, but we could not confirm it in the official source, so check current pricing before budgeting.
Our tip: try generating the same character in three different scenes plus a poster with short text. If it works, you have the base for a comic, a story or a brand kit.
