Anthropic introduced Opus 5.5, which the company says performs at the level of Claude Fable 5.1 on most work while costing 40% less to run than Opus 5.
What happened
On September 22, 2026, Anthropic released Claude Opus 5.5. According to the company, the model performs at the level of Claude Fable 5.1 on most work and costs 40% less to run than Opus 5.
Why it matters
If you use Claude to write long texts, review documents or prepare proposals, a top-tier model that costs less to run is good news. For now, the firm data point is the company's own: the same level as Fable 5.1 on most tasks and 40% lower running cost than Opus 5.
Where it already shows up
The Gemini Enterprise release notes say administrators can enable Claude Opus 5.5 and Claude Sonnet 5.5 inside Google's developer tools (Antigravity 2.0, Antigravity CLI and Antigravity for IDEs). Third-party models are off by default.
How to use it today
- If you already pay for a Claude plan, check the model picker to see whether Opus 5.5 appears.
- If you use tools that connect to Claude through an API, ask your provider whether they have added it and whether the price dropped.
- For simple, repetitive tasks, remember Anthropic also launched a cheaper small model (we already covered it).
