On October 8, Google Cloud introduced Gemini agent, an AI agent that works across Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slack and Microsoft 365. According to Techstrong.ai, it is currently in private preview for enterprise customers.
What it is
On October 8, Google Cloud launched Gemini agent, a single universal agent for work that can operate across business apps and enterprise systems via chat. It was unveiled at the Gemini at Work event.
The core idea is delegation. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian summed it up this way: you give it objectives, not instructions; you delegate an outcome and come back to finished work.
What it can do
- Within Google Workspace it works inside Gmail, Drive, Docs, Slides, Sheets, Chat and Calendar, and it also operates with Microsoft 365 and Slack.
- It connects to enterprise systems such as Salesforce, ServiceNow, Jira, Confluence and Snowflake.
- It can take a "teammate" or specialist role: according to the sources, these agents can have defined identities and their own email addresses.
- Each agent's access is limited to authorized information.
- It runs in the cloud and maintains a single context across tools, data and history, and it can be used from any device.
Cost controls
Google stressed that companies should be able to contain costs: spending caps that stop an agent's processing once it reaches its assigned budget (unless additional spending is approved) and automatic model selection that assigns less demanding tasks to lower-cost models. Today it can route across the Gemini family of models and Anthropic's Claude; Google Cloud said other models, closed and open, will come in the future.
What is still unknown
According to Techstrong.ai, Gemini agent is for now in private preview for enterprise customers. The sources consulted do not specify which Workspace plans will get it or a general availability date, and they do not detail pricing or published benchmarks.
What it means for you
If you use Google Workspace in your business, keep an eye on this: Google's pitch is for AI assistants to move from answering to carrying out work from objectives. In the meantime, you can start organizing your emails, quotes and meeting notes so any agent has good raw material to work with.
