OpenAI is adding labeled visual ads next to image results in ChatGPT. They start this month in the U.S. with an initial test group of advertisers.
OpenAI announced on October 5 that ChatGPT will show visual ads next to the images users ask it to generate. It is part of its ad product line-up, which aims to attract advertisers who want to tell their stories with more imagery.
What we know
- The ads will begin appearing later this month, in the United States only for now.
- An initial test group of advertisers, with products and services, will take part.
- The ads will be clearly labeled and, according to the company, will not influence the answers ChatGPT provides.
- OpenAI is also expanding its measurement tools and partner network, with solutions like AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, Kochava and Singular.
- Down the line, advertisers will be able to reach ChatGPT's 1.2 billion weekly users, once the ads roll out globally.
Context
OpenAI introduced ads earlier this year to support its free and low-cost plans, and extended them to India in August.
Why it matters to you
If you use ChatGPT for free or on a low-cost plan to create images, you may soon see advertising next to your results. If you run a business, it is a sign that ChatGPT is becoming a place to advertise; for now the rollout is U.S. only.
