Black Forest Labs released the open weights of Klein, an image model with native 4K output that runs on 8 GB graphics cards. It is free for commercial use if your annual revenue is under $5 million.
Black Forest Labs, the German company behind the FLUX family, released on October 15 the open weights of FLUX 3 Image Klein, a 5.6-billion-parameter image model. In plain terms: you can download it and generate images on your own computer, without depending on a subscription.
What it does
- Creates images from text and also edits images you already have.
- Generates from up to ten reference images, useful for keeping the same product or character.
- Delivers native 4K output and lets you mark with boxes where each element should go.
- With the INT8 version it runs on NVIDIA cards with just 8 GB of video memory; according to The Decoder, it generates an image in under 9 seconds on an RTX 4070.
The fine print on the license
Commercial use is free for individuals and companies with annual revenue under $5 million. Larger organizations need a separate agreement or can use the API. Downloading the weights does not mean unlimited rights.
Cloud pricing
If you don't want to install anything, Black Forest Labs' API charges from $0.009 per 1K image, and there is also an online Playground.
Who it's for
If you sell products or make covers, flyers or illustrations and have a computer with a decent graphics card, it's a way to generate images without paying per image. If not, the cloud option is very cheap.
