OpenAI updated ChatGPT's voice on October 15 with 13 new voices and more natural accents, including a new Mexican Spanish option.
OpenAI introduced GPT-Live-1.1 on October 15 and began rolling it out to all users, with 13 new voices for Voice in ChatGPT, Codex and dots. According to DataNorth, the voices cover French, German, Hindi, Japanese, Korean and Mexican Spanish, and English gets a voice called Bubbie. Which voices you see depends on your region and account.
What changes in practice? OpenAI promises more natural accents and better response to instructions. What the assistant says while it searches also changes: before, it repeated phrases like "let me check" every few seconds, and now it uses more varied announcements and a more natural handover to the model working in the background. GPT-Live-1.1 is offered to Plus, Pro and Business users; Free and Go users get GPT-Live-1.1 Quip, a smaller version of the model. OpenAI does not say how much quality that version gives up.
Who it helps: DataNorth notes that voice pays off where people cannot type, such as technicians on site, drivers or warehouse staff. A less mechanical voice brings that use closer, though an improvement in other languages says nothing about how it handles your own vocabulary.
What is still unknown: OpenAI has not published numbers or test results on how much performance improved. It says the model also does better in many other languages, but gives no list. Some users online praise the accents and shorter pauses; others regret that Mexican is the only Spanish accent added. API access is coming soon, with no date: the API currently remains on version 1.
If you make videos with voiceover, DataNorth does not cover that use: its advice centers on talking with ChatGPT and on testing with each team's own vocabulary.
