ChatGPT launches "locked chats": a way to hide sensitive conversations from view

OpenAI is rolling out a feature that hides selected chats from your history, pinned chats and search. It's available from the free plan, on web, desktop and mobile. It hides chats from view, but it is not end-to-end encryption and does not change OpenAI's data retention.
If you use ChatGPT for business things (a delicate quote, pricing ideas, a contract draft, something personal), there is now a way to keep them out of sight.
OpenAI announced "locked chats." It's a private space, similar to the locked folder in Google Photos, where you can hide selected conversations from your chat history, pinned chats and search.
Who can use it? The feature is available to ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users on desktop, web and mobile. In other words, you don't need to pay to try it.
What is it good for in practice?
- If you share your screen on a video call or a consulting session, your sensitive chats don't show up in the sidebar.
- If someone else uses your computer or phone, or asks you to show them something in ChatGPT, your client work conversations stay off the list.
- If you juggle several projects, you can separate what's confidential from what's for everyday use.
What the feature does not do: locked chats hide conversations from view, but this is not end-to-end encryption and it does not change how OpenAI retains your data. It also doesn't change what you say or type in them. In addition, if you reset the PIN, all of your locked chats are deleted, so keep that in mind before doing it. It's still a good idea not to paste data you don't want to share (passwords, clients' bank details).
If you already have an account, check the app or the web to see if the option has appeared, since the rollout is gradual.
