Gemini gets more personal in your car: it uses Gmail, Calendar and Maps with your permission

Google announced it is upgrading Gemini in vehicles with a personal intelligence feature. It can draw on information from Gmail, Google Calendar, YouTube, Maps, Google Search history and other connected services to understand your preferences and activities.

How does it work? According to Google, with your permission, Personal Intelligence securely connects your information to give tailored answers. You can enable it to let Gemini pull information from your emails, photos and calendar to answer complex questions without touching your phone while you drive. For example, you can ask for your flight gate and whether your flight is on time, and Gemini answers both at once.

When does it arrive? The feature launches today in Android Auto and will expand to cars with Google built-in in the coming months. Personal Intelligence rolled out in the U.S. in March and is now in beta in global markets.

Who can use it? Google says Personal Intelligence is rolling out to eligible personal Google accounts for people aged 18 and older, and is not available for Workspace business, enterprise, or education users. It is also not available in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, or Nigeria. If you use a Workspace account for work, this feature does not apply to you.

Heads up: it's optional and needs your authorization. Your apps aren't connected until you choose to turn it on, you can pick which apps to connect, and you can turn it off anytime in your Gemini settings. If you don't use it, navigation, music, calls and questions still work in the car, but answers won't be tailored to you.
