The Y Combinator-backed startup promises finished videos from text or images and opened a $1 million pool of free credits for creators. General access will come later.
VideoGen, a San Francisco AI video company backed by Y Combinator, unveiled Model 1, its first video-generation model, on October 20, 2026.
What it promises
According to the company's press release, Model 1 turns text prompts and images into finished multi-shot videos up to ten minutes long. A Grainzilla report adds that it starts from a prompt or 16 images. The company says the model has thinking and creative direction built in.
Access and price
For now access is limited to private partners; general availability will follow after more safety testing. VideoGen expects Model 1 projects to cost more than 50% less than comparable models, based on internal validation, but final pricing, official benchmarks and third-party validation are still underway. In other words, these are company claims, not yet independently verified.
Free credits for creators
On October 20 VideoGen opened applications for a $1 million pool of free credits for projects by creators, filmmakers and studios, including students and amateurs. Credits will be distributed through the end of 2026, based on each project's scope.
Safety
The company says Model 1 includes guardrails to block adult and illegal content and that videos carry invisible watermarks identifying their synthetic origin.
What to do
If you make video, you can apply for the credits. To produce right now, you still need other tools.
