OpenAI opens its Decisions API to everyone: "pick an option" answers up to 10 times faster

It classifies messages or picks actions in roughly 100 to 180 milliseconds; it's a tool for people who build apps.
On Thursday, October 22, OpenAI made its Decisions API available to all customers, after introducing it at its developer event on September 29.
What it is, in plain words
Regular language models write long answers. This tool does something different: you give it a question and a list of possible answers, and it picks. It can return three kinds of results: probability estimates, a choice between options, or a score based on criteria you define.
The key number
According to OpenAI, it can decide up to 10 times faster than the underlying model through the traditional API (Responses). Nikunj Handa, the API product lead, told TechCrunch that time dropped from 1 to 3 seconds to roughly 100 to 180 milliseconds. OpenAI did it by modifying an existing model, not training a new one.
Example uses
- Sorting customer messages: is it a complaint, a quote request or a shipping question?
- Deciding who to route a conversation to.
- Scoring how urgent an email is.
These examples are illustrative; the tool is meant for people who build applications, not for end users.
What it means for you
If you don't code, you won't use it directly. The source says OpenAI designed this tool so that developers can use artificial intelligence for tasks that require quick decisions, with shorter response times and lower processing costs.
To organize leads and appointments without programming anything, you can start with a CRM such as Point2Lead.
