On October 26 OpenAI reported results in math, computer science and physics. The math and computer science proofs are public; the physics group delayed releasing its materials, with no date announced.
OpenAI announced on Monday that its models generated three potential discoveries in mathematics, computer science and physics. These are results the company itself is presenting, and they are still being reviewed by third parties.
What OpenAI said
- Computer science: its models produced a proof that the Exponential Time Hypothesis, a conjecture about how hard certain problems are to solve, is false. OpenAI says the result was subsequently verified using Lean, software for formally checking mathematical proofs.
- Mathematics: proofs addressing the Kakeya conjecture and related problems across all dimensions.
- Physics: results concerning the mathematical foundations of quantum chromodynamics, the theory describing interactions between fundamental particles.
Outside review
OpenAI says it is working with outside researchers to examine, explain and build on the findings, including a physics group led by Nobel laureate David Gross. The math and computer science proofs have been made public; the physics group opted to delay releasing its materials while it prepares its own analysis. The source does not say when, or whether, they will be released.
Why it matters
It doesn't change your work today. It is a signal of where AI companies are pointing: proving their models can do more than write text. Until other researchers confirm it, these are OpenAI's claims, not established facts.
