Canva launched Craft, its first in-house image model. You use it from the Dream Lab tab, and it works in two stages: it first plans the composition and then generates the image.
If you make flyers, social posts or material for your business, this one hits close to home. Canva launched Canva Craft, its first image generation model, built by its research team to compete with models from Google, OpenAI, ByteDance and Meta.
What changes for you
- Where to use it: Canva Craft is available on the platform to all users, who can reach it from the Dream Lab tab.
- Layered designs: images made with Craft can be converted into layered designs using Magic Layers, the company's image-to-design transformer. That lets you move or change elements afterwards instead of starting over.
- Plans first, then draws: according to Canva, the model works in two stages. In the first it interprets your prompt and creates a plan covering the spatial relationships between elements, their relative scale, the visual hierarchy and information for the text. In the second it generates an image of up to 2K resolution, in up to 30 different aspect ratios for various platforms. Canva says this approach allows images with accurate details and legible text, and precise edits without changing other parts of the image; these are the company's own claims.
- Trained on designs: Canva says that, rather than photographs, it used human-designed templates from its library to train the model, including posters, social posts, presentations, infographics, menus and typography-rich layouts.
- For developers: the model will also be available through Canva's API.
- Cheaper versions on the way: Canva says it is developing two cost-efficient versions, called Craftfast and Craft-ultrafast, to be released soon.
What is still unknown
The sources consulted do not say how many Craft images each plan includes or what the API will cost per image, and Canva has not published those figures. Since AI features can use your plan's AI allowance, it is worth checking it before generating a big batch.
How to try it: open Canva, go to Dream Lab and ask for an image for your next post. If you like it, turn it into a layered design to adjust text and colors.
