Google announced on October 29 that Gemini lets you open and edit files without leaving the conversation. The feature is available to all users, including those who don't pay, in the countries and languages where Gemini is supported. PDFs can be edited on web and mobile; other formats are web-only for now.
If you use an AI chat to draft a proposal, a price sheet or a presentation, you know how annoying it is to copy everything into another app just to fix one detail. Google has just removed that step in Gemini.
According to ProPakistani's report, Google added features to create, preview and edit documents, PDFs, spreadsheets, presentations and code directly inside the chatbot. Supported formats include Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide presentations, PDFs, Markdown, TXT files and code. Files open inside the same conversation and can be changed without leaving Gemini.
There is also a full-screen editing mode. Instead of asking Gemini to regenerate an entire file, you can select a specific section and request changes: for example, highlight a paragraph and ask Gemini to rewrite or summarize it, or select a table and ask it to turn the data into a graph.
With PDFs, Google showed an example: upload handwritten notes and ask Gemini to turn them into a PDF study guide, which you can then edit and ask questions about. For presentations, Gemini generates the content, shows a preview of the slides and lets you adjust wording and structure before opening the file in Google Slides or downloading it.
Mind the mobile limits: Google confirmed that PDF preview and editing work on both the Gemini website and the mobile app. However, editing the other supported formats (Google Docs, Google Sheets, presentations, Markdown, TXT and code) is currently limited to the web version, and the company has not said when it will reach mobile.
What matters for you: Google confirmed the features are available to all Gemini users, including those without a paid subscription, in the countries and languages where Gemini is supported.
How to use it today:
- On the web version, ask Gemini for a quote or price list as a spreadsheet and adjust it right there.
- Upload your notes or a long document and ask for a PDF guide; this also works in the mobile app.
- On the web version, build a client presentation and touch it up before opening it in Google Slides or downloading it.
As always, check figures, names and prices before sending anything to a client.
