The new «Connected Apps» platform lets businesses and developers reach users through Gemini and Search. For now it is in preview for U.S. developers.
Google wants businesses to show up inside its AI experiences, and on October 28 it introduced its Connected Apps Platform. The premise, according to TechCrunch, is that this kind of integration could shift consumers away from opening and using individual apps and toward using their favorite services through their preferred AI provider.
What it is. It is a platform for any business or developer to submit their own «connected apps» so people can use them from Search or Gemini. Developers can choose whether their app is available in Search, the Gemini app, or both. Once an app is live, its creator can track traffic, latency and error rates, and keep control of their brand identity, such as verified logos and authenticated accounts.
What already exists. According to TechCrunch, Google already has more than 50 connected apps in Gemini, with partners including Adobe, Experian, Localiza and Peloton, in addition to its own services. Those apps will come to Search over the next few weeks; today Search has fewer integrations, such as Instacart, Canva and YouTube Music. Droid Life, for its part, counts more than 50 connected apps between Search and Gemini, in areas ranging from productivity and event ticketing to health and fitness. Calm, the meditation app, is another new partner and its app will soon launch on both, and new capabilities with Peloton for workout planning are being rolled out.
What is still missing. The platform preview is available in beta only to U.S. developers, who can join a waitlist. Google did not say when it would become more broadly available.
Why it matters. TechCrunch compares the moment to SEO: it could be one of the first steps for businesses that want their services to be more visible to users on the «agentic web».
