The preview can change scenes, text and restore photos. For now it only edits images; creating from text is coming later.
Microsoft introduced MAI-Image-2.7 Preview, its newest image-editing model. It debuted in second place on Artificial Analysis's image editing leaderboard with an Elo score of 1,193. Only OpenAI's GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst beats it, at 1,199, and it sits ahead of GPT Image 2.5 Flare at 1,182. The previous version, MAI-Image-2.6, scored 1,151.
What it can do. Microsoft describes examples such as moving a product into a new setting, changing individual objects without breaking the rest of the scene, improving and restoring images, and modifying text and symbols inside the image while keeping them naturally integrated. For anyone selling online, the product-in-a-new-setting example is the most useful.
What to know before getting excited:
- It is a preview, not a finished product.
- You can try it in MAI Playground, Arena and Artificial Analysis.
- Unlike the previous version, for now it focuses on editing images you already have, not generating them from scratch. Microsoft says text-to-image generation is coming soon.
- Pricing and availability for developers through Microsoft Foundry have not been announced yet.
Leaderboards measure preference in comparative tests; they don't guarantee a perfect result with your own photos. If you want to try it, use a product photo you already have and compare it with what you use today.
