OpenAI opened a preview to send tasks to Dot over iMessage or RCS, using text, photos or voice notes. Messages pass through a third party (Linq), so they are not end-to-end encrypted.
OpenAI opened a preview so some ChatGPT Pro subscribers in the United States can message their Dot agent by text: iMessage on iPhone or RCS on Android, according to RSWebSols. Traditional SMS is not supported.
What changes
- OpenAI announced it on October 28: you can delegate a task or ask it to keep an eye on something using text, images or voice notes.
- Dot can also message you first, with progress updates on assigned tasks and alerts for items it is monitoring.
- Only you, as the account holder, can message Dot, and it only replies to you.
- Dot's memory syncs between ChatGPT and messaging threads, so a task started in the app can continue in the text conversation.
- To turn it on, go to Dot's profile in ChatGPT and choose the texting option. iPhone users must have iMessage enabled; Android users need RCS.
Privacy
OpenAI provides the service through a partnership with Linq, a third party the conversations pass through. According to Techstrong, cited by RSWebSols, conversations are not fully secure because they pass through that third party, although OpenAI ran penetration testing to look for possible vulnerabilities. Users are advised to be careful before sending sensitive information, such as passport or financial details.
Note: OpenAI's help page, referenced in the original coverage, could not be read directly, so this piece does not confirm what data OpenAI retains or how Linq processes it.
Availability
For now it is only for ChatGPT Pro users in the US, in preview. Dot launched in late September 2026. Pro subscribers in the UK, the European Economic Area and Switzerland were left out of the initial launch, and OpenAI has not announced a timeline for them.
