Gemini launches shared avatars: friends can appear in your AI images and videos (with limits)

You can create an avatar from recordings of your face and voice, share it with others and tag them in your prompts. You decide who has access. For now it only works in English, it is not available in the EEA, Switzerland or the UK, and videos require a paid Google AI plan.
Google made Gemini's personal avatars more social. You can now share your digital likeness with friends, tag each other in prompts, and create images and videos featuring the whole group.
Current limitations
- For now, avatars only work in English.
- They are not available in the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland or the UK.
- To create videos with your avatar you need a paid Google AI plan.
- You must be at least 18 and have a personal Google account.
How it is set up
- The avatar is created from recordings of your face and voice.
- On gemini.google.com, in the text box, choose Add Files, then More, then Avatar. Then follow the onscreen instructions to record yourself with your camera and microphone.
- To share it, go to Settings, open the Avatar section and enter the Gmail address of the person you want to include. That person can accept or decline the invitation.
- To use it, tag the avatar in your prompt with @ and the Google username, yours or that of anyone who has shared theirs with you.
What Google says
The idea is that your avatar keeps character and voice consistent across content, and that you can add or remove anyone's access whenever you want. If you remove someone's access, they can no longer create new images or videos with your avatar, but anything they already made is not deleted.
Why creators may care
If you make content with a team or collaborators, you can appear together in AI-generated images and videos without everyone recording in the same place. Before using it in public content, tell each person who will appear and ask for their permission, and check from time to time who has access to your avatar.
