The meeting took place October 31 in Yongin, South Korea, two days after a podcast in which Altman talked about DRAM memory was released. Samsung has worked since October 2025 to supply memory chips for the Stargate project.
OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman met on Saturday, October 31, with about 50 presidents of Samsung Group companies at its training center in Yongin, south of Seoul.
What is known
- The executives came from the electronics, finance and biotech affiliates, according to The Next Web.
- Samsung and OpenAI signed a letter of intent on AI infrastructure in October 2025, and since then Samsung has worked to supply memory chips for the Stargate data center project.
- The meeting came two days after a podcast was released in which Altman said it is "quite terrible" for the world's limited supply of DRAM to sit in people's own computers and be used 5% of the time. He also said memory makers would "each" make about $100 billion of free cash flow in a year.
- Samsung posted a record quarterly profit on Thursday on AI memory demand.
Why it matters to a small business
SK Hynix said this week that memory shortages will last to 2030, and the memory market remains short of supply. That pressure on supply is part of the story behind the prices of the technology we all use every day.
